Rumbek East County Commissioner Zachariah Malual Anyuon confirmed the incident, saying it occurred on Saturday after a herd of cattle from the Lakes cattle camp strayed into the farmer’s field.
“The cattle entered the farm, and the owner reacted by injuring eight cows with pangas,” Malual said. “Police immediately intervened, arrested the suspect, and placed him in custody at the county headquarters.”
The commissioner said an investigation is underway to determine the extent of the damage and whether other individuals were involved.
“We value both cows and crops because they are all sources of livelihood,” he explained. “We don’t want any destruction of property, whether farms or cattle. We’ve already instructed cattle owners to control their animals and farmers to guard their fields during the day when cattle are released for grazing.”
Malual emphasised that anyone found breaking the law would be held accountable once the investigation is complete.
Meanwhile, Akuckerieth Marial Malual, a cattle owner whose herd was affected, said 15 cows were injured — eight belonging to him and seven to another herder.
“The farmer slashed the cows with pangas,” Akuckerieth said. “I didn’t retaliate because I believe in following the law. I reported the matter to the authorities, and the suspect was later arrested.”
He said he is ready to compensate the farmer for any damage caused to his crops but expects the same to be done for his injured animals.
“I am asking the government to investigate the matter thoroughly. The farmer should have reported the incident instead of attacking the cows,” he added.
Local women’s representative Deborah Alek Akim also condemned the act, calling it a “grave mistake” and urging farmers to seek legal redress instead of resorting to violence.
“Cows are our source of wealth and have played a historic role in our nation’s struggle,” she said. “No one should kill or injure them out of anger. The proper step is to report such cases to chiefs or youth leaders for mediation.”
Authorities say the suspect remains in custody as investigations continue, with the case expected to be forwarded to court upon completion.
