while the exact toll remains unclear, residents and emergency volunteers confirmed that civilians were among the injured, and that the RSF’s artillery bombardment has become a daily threat to life in the besieged city. the humanitarian situation is deteriorating rapidly, with widespread food shortages and rising fears of famine as the siege tightens.
According to the El Fasher resistance committees, more than 20 civilians have been killed in the city since the beginning of May as a result of repeated shelling. mortar rounds continue to fall on homes, markets, and other civilian infrastructure, leaving large part of the city in ruins.
the committees described the humanitarian conditions as catastrophic. “Survival has become a daily struggle,” they said in a statement issued on Tuesday. “Many residents are now forced to eat tree leaves and animal feed, as food supplies have entirely run out.”
The statement painted a bleak picture of daily life, where even the most basic meals have become inaccessible. ” A lentil dish, once considered the simplest form of nourishment, is now rare luxury. most people rely on what little they can gather from an environment exhausted by war and poverty,” community kitchens, which once played a critical role in feeding the hungry, have largely shut down due to the lack of supplies and support.
in an alarming sign of desperation, some households have begun using industrial-grade salt, normally reserved for bakeries, to cook what little food they have. the committees say this is further evidence of the total collapse of the city’s supply chains.
RSF shelling continues to target residential areas, markets, and shelters hosting displaced families, worsening the already dire conditions. with supply routes cut off and humanitarian access blocked, the city remains isolated and increasingly uninhabitable.
in their statement, the resistance committees issued an urgent to international humanitarian organizations for direct assistance. “We call on relief agencies and institutions to urgently support the remaining communal kitchens in El Fasher, which have become the last refuge for the city’s poor and displaced,” they said.
as the siege and shelling continue, El Fasher’s residents remain trapped in a deepening crisis, facing starvation, bombardment, and abandonment– all while awaiting desperately needed intervention from the outside world.
