BOR – Former Akobo County Commissioner Puok Nyang Tutjiek expressed deep gratitude to the Akobo community and called for sustainable peace among ethnic groups in Jonglei State following his dismissal by President Salva Kiir on May 13, 2025.

Nyang, who served as commissioner for 22 months after his appointment on July 30, 2023, reflected on his tenure with pride and dedication in a statement seen by Sudans Post.

“First and foremost, I would like to thank the Akobo Community for the support rendered to me… My love for you is unquestionable,” he said.

He extended heartfelt appreciation to his friends, relatives, colleagues, and family, emphasising their unwavering support. “I will never forget that support, and time is here to support you too,” he added.

The former commissioner acknowledged Kiir for appointing him and thanked First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar, who also doubles as Chairman of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement in Opposition (SPLM-IO), for nominating him under the provisions of the Revitalised Agreement on the Resolution of Conflict in South Sudan.

Nyang also expressed gratitude to the three Jonglei State governors he worked under—Denay Jok Chagor, Majoub Biel Turuk Dak, and Dr. Riek Gai Kok—crediting them as sources of experience and guidance during his tenure.

Highlighting his commitment to public service, Nyang noted, “As the commissioner, I served you with all my ability. I never slept during the day, I never slept before 12 am since I took office, or I always woke up after 6 am.” He attributed his good health throughout his service to divine grace.

Mr. Nyang urged the people of Akobo to pursue lasting peace among the Nuer, Dinka Bor, and Murle communities. “There is a need for sustainable peace… as we collectively need to end the killings (ambushes) on roads, child and woman abductions,” he said, addressing ongoing intercommunal violence in the region.

Before his sacking, the former commissioner was already serving an indefinite suspension handed down by the Governor of Jonglei State, Dr. Riek Gai Kok, after he was accused of leaving his work station and crossing the border into Ethiopia without obtaining permission from the state authorities.

The state government also claimed that Deng hosted the Commissioner of Pangak County at the Akobo County Headquarters without notifying the state authorities, and displayed sympathy to detained First President Dr Riek Machar. It is unclear whether the decision to fire the commissioner was informed by the above stance.
