JUBA — The leader of the breakaway SPLA-IO Kitgwang faction General Simon Gatwech Dual is calling on other holdout opposition groups for a united fight to topple President Salva Kiir Mayardit from power, saying there is no prospect for peace with him.

This comes after the former SPLA-IO military chief said in a position paper last week that free and fair elections are not possible while President Kiir is still in power, accusing the regional community of making peace efforts in South Sudan difficult.

Speaking to Sudans Post this morning, Brig. Gen. Alfred Gach Thot, the spokesman of the SPLA-IO faction said they have concluded that there is no way for peace with Kiir, saying the later is adamant to any arrangement that brings instability to the country.

“As it is clear from the position paper issued by the chairman and commander in chief, the SPLM/SPLA (IO) Kitgwang sees no prospect for peace with Salva Kiir talking of peace with him is just a waste of time and prolong the suffering of our people,” he said.

“He has signed a lot of peace agreements with many political actors in the country and the truth is that these peace agreements have not been implemented because he has always been adamant to any arrangement that would bring total peace to the citizens of South Sudan,” he said.

The opposition official further said General Gatwech has called on holdout opposition groups to unite their ranks and files in order to topple Kiir from power to end the suffering of the South Sudanese once and for all.

“We have wrote to all the opposition groups outside the peace agreement and we have asked them to join us and work as an alliance in order to bring change to our country,” he added.
