Government to increase teachers’ salaries – vice president

JUBA – South Sudan government will increase pay rise for teachers, the lowest-paying civil servants – across the country, according to the country’s vice-president for service cluster Hussein Abdelbaggi.

The comments by the senior government official comes as reports say teachers in the world’s youngest country are the lowest paid among other civil servants and have to do manual works to feed their families.

Speaking during back to learning campaign in Juba on Monday, Hussein promised that the government was working to increase pay rise and other benefits to motivate them for the job.

“Education and health are the backbones of our cluster and we have to fight very hard as our priority to help the teachers, especially to prepare their salaries – the new hierarchy of salaries,” Hussein said.

In South Sudan, a scale 12 teacher is paid a monthly salary of SSP 347, something less than $1.
