Gov’t increases health sector budget to 10%

South Sudan Vice President for Service Cluster, Hussein Abdelbagi Akol said the increment of budget allocation to the Ministry of Health from 1.9% to 10% is aimed to improve the delivery of health services to the citizens.

JUBA – The government of South Sudan has allocated 10 percent of the national budget to the health sector in this fiscal year.

South Sudan Vice President for Service Cluster, Hussein Abdelbagi Akol said the increment of budget allocation to the Ministry of Health from 1.9% to 10% is aimed to improve the delivery of health services to the citizens.

“We have resolved to increase the budget allocation to the ministry of health from 1.9% to 10% and we still look ahead to reach 15% per Abuja declaration,” Abdelbagi said during a two-day conference on leadership and governance organized by the Ministry of Health.

Abdelbagi disclosed that the government will increase health budget allocation to 15 percent per Abuja Declaration.

“I urge the Ministry of Health to work on policy guidelines and standard operating procedures to ensure standard and quality health services are delivered to our people,” he said.

According to the UN, a total of 128 humanitarians, mostly South Sudanese, have lost their lives while providing humanitarian assistance to people since the conflict broke out in 2013.

The Vice President has directed the states authorities to investigate the killing of healthcare workers and bring the culprits to book.

He promised to work with relevant authorities to address the issues of safety and protection health workers across the country.

“The state authorities should take this as a serious issue that will affect the health services delivery at states levels,” he stated

Elizabeth Achuei Yol, Minister of Health vowed to work hard in improving the health services in the country.

“Strengthening governance and leadership capacity at all levels are important in contributing toward more effective and efficient health a system which will lead to improvement of the health sector,” Achuei said.
