Gov’t to release report on Sherikat incident today

JUBA – South Sudan’s ministry of justice will today release result of a three-month investigation into a deadly killing of around Nine people at Sherikat, a Juba neighborhood, in early June this year, according to a statement seen by Sudans Post.

On June 3, 2020, a South Sudan People’s Defense Force (SSPDF) officer who is related to President Salva Kiir opened fire against civilians over land ownership dispute killing nine people instantly. Three other people plus the officer who was identified as Colonel Lual Akook Wol Kiir died from wounds later at a hospital.

Two days later, President Kiir formed an investigation committee to prove into the incident.

In a statement this morning, the ministry of justice called for media conference at the premise of the ministry of justice in Juba saying the agenda of the news conference would be the release the results of the three-month investigation into the incident.

“This is to cordially inform all the journalists and representatives of media houses to go to the Ministry of Justice and constitutional affairs at 3:00 pm today on Thursday, 3rd September 2020. The main agenda is to release the report on the Sherikat incident that led to the loss of lives,” the statement seen by Sudans Post said.

It said high-level attendance would include the “Minister of Presidential Affairs Nhial Deng Nhial and the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs Justice Ruben Madol Arol.”
