JUBA — Prominent Activist Edmund Yakani is urging the transitional government of national unity in Juba to immediately hold an emergency national conference to formulate ways for mitigation of the devastating floods.
Torrential rains in Maban this week resulted in heavy floods that have displaced many residents with the government of President Salva Kiir being urged to intervene.
In a statement, Yakani who is also the Executive Director of Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO) urged the government to convene a national conference on floods mitigation.
“CEPO is urging the government to urgently hold national conference on mitigation of this new trend of floods across the country,” Yakani said in the statement extended to Sudans Post.
He said “the incident of Bunj area of Maban county should be taken as a serious alert and recently I was tracking the situation of the floods across the country.
“The indicators I came across are disturbing and requires urgent government plans for mitigation,” he added.
The outspoken activist further said that “it is essential for the government to mobilize the communities to have recovery and resilience plans in the face of the floods.”
He further added that “it is paramount for the government to establish daily reporting system on the status of the floods across the country.”
