Head of South Sudan’s peace monitoring body to attend Rome talks – statement

JUBA – The chairman of South Sudan’s Ceasefire and Transitional Security Arrangements Monitoring and Verification Mechanism (CTSAMVM) is leading a delegation of the peace monitoring body to the peace talks in Rome between holdout opposition groups and the government.

On Friday, talks between South Sudan government and a number of opposition groups under the umbrella of the South Sudan Opposition Movements Alliance (SSOMA) is expected to resume after almost a year following its suspension due to the outbreak of the novel coronavirus.

In a statement on Tuesday, the CTSAMVM said Major-General Hamid Mohamed Dafalla will lead a delegation of the body to Rome where the Community of Sant’Egidio is hosting South Sudan peace talks.

The statement seen by Sudans Post said the Rome talks will focus on the commitment of the parties to the conflict to the 2017 ceasefire agreement they recommitted themselves to in January this year.

“CTSAMVM Acting Chairman Maj. Gen. Hamid Mohamed Dafalla is leading the CTSAMVM delegation to the South Sudan peace talks between the Government of the Republic of South Sudan and the South Sudan Opposition Movements Alliance (SSOMA) in Rome under the auspices of the Comunita Di Sant’ Egidio from 9 to 12 October,” the statement said.

“The talks will focus on the Cessation of Hostilities Agreement and the political dialogue among signatories and non-signatories to the R-ARCSS,” added.
