JUBA – Mayor of Juba City Council of Central Equatoria State, Michael Ladu Allah-Jabu, on Thursday reiterated his plans to ban harmful spirits gins, which he said have destroyed many lives of young men and women in Juba.

“I am going to declare in a short run a full banning of that particular alcohol in the city of Juba, the small one with red cap,” Allah-Jabu said during a networking business seminar with Ethiopian traders organized by the Ethiopian embassy in Juba on Thursday.

Allah-Jubu said there are increased cases of suicide and deaths in Juba attributed to excessive consumption of alcohol.

“Every day in the city, we are burying 5 to 7 people who are dying from alcohol according to police results, it shows that they died from alcohol and hunger,” Allah-Jabu.

Allah-Jubu noted that alcoholism has become a big threat to the livelihood of many in the community.

“The issue of alcohol is also a problem, most of you are engaging in alcohol, you get a bar everywhere, you also get shop mix of food commodities and alcohol and the most dangerous one is the spirit.”

Mayor urged traders to prohibit the selling of alcohol to reduce mental illness and alcohol-related deaths.

“When we analyzed this, we felt as though you (Ethiopian) also want to dangerous our generation. You also want to danger us because the types of alcohol you are selling are very dangerous.”

In February 2022, Juba City Council banned the sales, distribution, and consumption of all sorts of alcohol in residential areas, tea, or eating places under the council’s authority.

The order also banned night discos within residential areas in Juba.

“Sometimes, I feel bitter about this because you (Ethiopian traders) don’t consume it, you fear drinking it, it seems like you only manufactured it for us, South Sudanese.”
