JUBA – A South Sudanese diaspora activist, Dak Buoth, has joined the South Sudan People’s Movement (SSPM) led by General Stephen Buay Rolnyang, citing shared objectives for peace and good governance.

Buoth, a former chair of the South Sudan Civil Society Consortium, a Kenya-based civil society watchdog, said in a statement he was aligning himself with the SSPM due to their focus on human rights-oriented leadership.

In a letter to Buay seen by Sudans Post, Buoth pledged his commitment to working with the SSPM to achieve peace in South Sudan.

“I have joined the South Sudan People’s Movement (SSPM) effective June 14, 2024,” Buoth said in the letter. “This decision is based on our shared goals for good leadership in South Sudan that prioritizes human rights.”

Buoth acknowledged the numerous challenges South Sudan has faced since the 2013 conflict, emphasizing the need for political solutions.

“Our unity is crucial to address the problems plaguing South Sudan,” he said.

Buoth’s decision to join the SSPM comes at a critical juncture, he said, as South Sudan grapples with complex issues. He stressed the importance of collaboration to expedite the country’s transition from a state of displacement to one that respects human rights.

Praising Buay’s commitment to peace initiatives, including the Kenyan talks, Buoth said this leadership inspired his decision.

“This will encourage others to join,” Buoth said. “General Buay’s mission for South Sudan’s transformation and liberation is well-understood.”

Buoth pledged his loyalty to the SSPM’s program and its pursuit of lasting peace in South Sudan.

“I trust you and am committed to the cause,” he said to Buay, “knowing your capabilities as a courageous intellectual and historical freedom fighter for South Sudan.”

The founder of the Senior Youth of South Sudan (SYSS), a member of the diaspora South Sudan Civil Society Consortium, Buoth confirmed his resignation from the civil society organization to focus on his work with the SSPM.
