JUBA – South Sudan President Salva Kiir Mayardit has this afternoon called for an emergency cabinet meeting, days after his government announced that it would change the currency to improve economic situation.

“The meeting is now in progress and the resolutions of the meeting will be made public once the meeting is finished,” Nancy Abdel Rahaman reports for Sudans Post in Juba.

This morning, traders in Juba told Sudans Post that the South Sudanese Pound has depreciated further, recording its lowest rate of SSP 830 per $1.

South Sudan is facing a devastating economic downtrend as result of the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, corruption and the global downfall of oil prices.

Last week, as the Pound depreciates, the government announced that it would introduce a new currency soon, a move which has been criticized by some economic experts in the country who only see fighting corruption and end of war as direct solutions to the situation.

The only solution that may bring change in our economy is to first inject huge hard currency into the black market to sharply reach the dollar rate. And then take other meesures to futherly improve our economy instead of changing this innocent pounds.💷

This decision of changing South Sudan currency has nothing to do with this economic crisis rather the government should first implement the Revitalise peace agreement signed in Khartoum Sudan the collection of revenue should be done in a good ways.

  • There is no problems with our currecy the problems is with the top politicals because they are the ones who take dollars from the Bank and sell in the black market .
Our government is sleeping because when you went to black market you fine pure uneducated people selling the dollar where did they get the money from and now you are same people saying economy is collapse .
