This comes after a deadly violence broke out in the Sudanese capital Khartoum and other cities between the army and militia Rapid Support Forces (RSF) under Gen. Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, the deputy head of the transitional sovereign council.
In a statement released on Saturday evening, South Sudan’s foreign ministry expressed concerns over the violence, and revealed that President Salva Kiir Mayardit is currently in close contact with the leaders of Sudan in an effort to de-escalate the situation.
“The Republic of South Sudan is following with deep concern the unfolding situation in the Republic of the Sudan,” said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Republic of South Sudan.
“H.E President Salva Kiir Mayardit is in close contacts with the leaders of the Sudan in the hope that de-escalation of the current situation will be achieved,” it added.
South Sudan brokered the Sudan Peace Agreement in the capital city of Juba and remains a major guarantor of that agreement.
“The Republic of South Sudan, which is the closest country to the Sudan, expresses its hope that the current situation is brought to a speedy end,” the statement continued.
