JUBA, JULY 7, 2023 (SUDANS POST) – President Salva Kiir Mayardit and First Vice President Riek Machar on Thursday directed an “immediate deployment” of the Necessary Unified Forces (NUF) provided for in the revitalized peace agreement.

The decision by the two principles was reached following a briefing on the status of peace implementation by presidential security advisor and head of National Transitional Committee (NTC) Tut Gatluak and security briefing from NSS director of ISB Gen. Akol Koor Kuc.

“The country’s leadership also directed the immediate deployment of the graduated members of the Necessary Unified Forces, and the start of Phase Two of the training,” the presidency said in a statement following the meeting.

According to the briefing by Akol, the security situation has improved in recent months, and there is now a window of opportunity to deploy the peace forces and consolidate the gains made in the peace process.

The peace forces will be deployed to all parts of South Sudan, and they will be tasked with maintaining security and preventing any armed groups from controlling specific areas.

The forces will also be responsible for protecting civilians and promoting the rule of law.
