JUBA — The leader of Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N), Malik Agar has this evening met President Salva Kiir Mayardit, in the capital Juba and discussed ongoing transition in Sudan.

Malik is a member of the Sovereign Transitional Council led by General Abdel Fattah al Burban who said this afternoon that he will dissolve the council to give a chance to political forces to form an independent transitional government.

In a statement, South Sudan presidency said Agar discussed with President Kiir the Sudanese transition and the implementation of the Juba Peace Agreement signed in October 2020.

“His Excellency President Salva Kiir Mayardit held a meeting with the member of the Sudanese Sovereign Council, Mr. Malik Agar, Leader of SPLM- North Faction,” the presidency statement reads in part.

“During the meeting, the two leaders discussed issues related to the political situation in Sudan and implementation of the Juba peace agreement and its challenges,” it added.

In statement to the media, Agar said “mediation initiatives from the government of South Sudan are essential to finding a common ground for the parties involved.”

He further said that “the political unrest in Sudan may potentially cause instability in the region and affect the implementation of the peace agreement.”
