JUBA – South Sudan President Salva Kiir Mayardit has issued two presidential decrees forming the Reconstituted Transitional National Legislative Assembly and dissolving the National Dialogue Steering Committee.

The decrees readout on the state-owned South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation marks a greater step in the implementation of the revitalized peace agreement and it marks few steps towards the end of the completion of the implementation of Chapter two of the peace deal.

Kiir has appointed 550 politicians comprising opposition and government officials as part of the 2018 peace agreement. Presidential advisor on security Tut Gatluak was also appointed among members of the R-TNLA representing the ruling SPLM faction.

SPLM-IO welcomes formation of peace assembly

Reacting to the news, South Sudan’s main armed opposition group, SPLM-IO welcomed the presidential action and called on the South Sudanese head of state to also appoint officials into national commissions provided for in the revitalized peace agreement.

“While we welcome the reconstitution of the Transitional National Legislative Assembly, we urge President Salva Kiir to appoint the officials of the national commissions and the state parliament so that we move to Chapter two of the agreement,” Dut Majokdit, a senior SPLM-IO member told Sudans Post from Juba.
