JUBA — South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir Mayardit has dismissed Riek Bim Top as governor of Unity State and reappointed Joseph Nguen Monytuil to the position, according to a presidential decree issued Monday evening.

The decree, read on state-owned SSBC, did not provide reasons for the sudden removal of Riek Bim Top, who had been serving in the role for an about two years.

The decision came just hours after Sudans Post published an investigation exposing state involvement in attacks on civilians in Abiemnom County, raising questions about the timing of the leadership change.

Manytuil, a seasoned political figure and former governor of Unity State, now returns to the post amid ongoing political and security tensions in the oil-producing region.

There was no immediate response from the presidency linking the dismissal to the report. Further details are expected as the situation develops.
