Kiir tells AU he won’t take South Sudan back to war

South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir Mayardit on Friday told a delegation of the African Union Peace and Security Council that he won’t return the country to the deadly civil war.

JUBA, FEBRUARY 24th 2023 (SUDANS POST) – South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir Mayardit on Friday told a delegation of the African Union Peace and Security Council that he won’t return the country to the deadly civil war.

According to a statement seen by Sudans Post, the presidency said the meeting was held by Kiir with a delegation of AUPSC led by Edward Makaya who it said expressed his happiness with Kiir over the peace promise not to return the country to war.

“President Salva Kiir Mayardit on Friday held a meeting with African Union Peace and Security Council delegation to deliberate on the progress of implementation of the Revitalized Peace Agreement,” the presidency said in the statement.

“The Head of AU Peace and Security Council, Edward Makaya expressed his delight upon the commitment of the Government of National Unity to implement the outstanding tasks in the Revitalized Peace Agreement on Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan,” it added.

For his part, cabinet affairs minister Martin Elia Lomuro, asked the AU delegation to help “engage the International Community to lift arms embargo and sanctions imposed on South Sudan.”
