Kiir, Unity state governor agree civilian disarmament

JUBA – South Sudan president, Salva Kiir Mayardit, and Unity state governor, Joseph Nguen Manytuil Wijang have met this afternoon to discuss disarmament process for civilians in the oil-rich state, according to the presidency.

This year, South Sudan army was directed by Kiir to disarm civilians in Tonj and Lakes, triggering the infamous July fighting in which over 200 people including members of the organized forces were killed.

“On 14th December 2020, The Governor of Unity State Hon. Joseph Nguen Manytuil briefed H.E. President Salva Kiir Mayardit regarding the general situation of the State,” the presidency said in a statement seen by Sudans Post this afternoon.

In remarks to the media quoted by the presidency, governor Nguen said  he “discussed with H.E. President Salva Kiir Mayardit about disarming the local population of Unity State to reduce cattle rustling.”

For his part, the South Sudanese head of state who has in the pass called for civilian disarmament “assured Hon. Joseph Manytuil of the Government’s support to ensure that the security is maintained across Unity State.”
