JUBA, MARCH 7, 2023 (SUDANS POST) – South Sudan’s presidential advisor for peace Gen. David Reath Malual collapsed during a community meeting at Freedom Hall in the capital Juba on Monday, according to First Vice President Riek Machar.
In a statement seen by this publication, Machar who is also the chairman and commander in chief of the main armed opposition Sudan People’s Liberation Movement in Opposition (SPLM-IO) said Malual who is also a senior member of the SPLM-IO died after asthmatic attack.
“Hon. Gen. David Reath Malual Lath, Presidential Advisor for Peace has passed on this evening 6 March 2023 at about 7:45 PM in Juba at Promise Hospital He has been asthmatic,” Machar said in the statement.
“While he was presiding over a meeting with Lou leaders to evaluate the results of the three days Lou Conference that was held on 2-4 March 2023 in Freedom Hall, he was attacked by asthma.
“He was rushed to the Promise hospital. He died minutes on arrival to the hospital, while being attended to by doctors,” he added.
The first vice president described the late presidential advisor for peace as “a hero of the liberation struggle for Self-Determination and Independence of South Sudan.”
Malual, a senior member of the main armed opposition group was appointed as presidential advisor for peace last year to replace Gen. Simon Gatwech Dual who had turned down his appointment as presidential peace advisor.
