The victim, Amou Mabior, was breastfeeding when she suffered the fatal bite last week, plunging her family into a desperate situation.
According to Luka Lual Aleu Jok, the Health Education Focal Point at the state Ministry of Health, the incident left the infant’s father, Aguer Aguer Amet, struggling to provide care and basic needs for the newborn. Lual said they immediately took to local radio stations, including Akol Yam FM, to appeal for government intervention.
“We reached out to government officials through radio broadcasts, and they responded. The governor has donated 2 million SSP,” Lual stated.
Amet confirmed receiving the support directly from Governor Simon Ober Mawut, following the public appeal.
“I got a call from Luka Lual after he made the announcement on air. The governor gave 2 million and an additional 500,000 SSP. I am grateful for this assistance because many families face such unexpected tragedies,” he said.
Amet revealed that the late Amou had previously lost children under unclear circumstances. She now leaves behind two minors and the newborn, whom he must care for despite the unpredictable living conditions.
Lual urged Amet to use the donated funds wisely, especially to ensure the newborn receives adequate nutrition and proper care during this critical stage.
Snake bite cases have surged in Northern Bahr el Ghazal in recent weeks. In a separate incident last week, a man in Aweil West County died after a snake bite despite being rushed to Nyamlel Hospital for treatment.
Authorities are cautioning residents to remain vigilant, particularly during the rainy season when snake encounters are more frequent.
Citizens have been advised to clear bushes around homes, avoid walking at night without lighting, and refrain from settling in flood-prone areas. Disaster management officials continue to urge preventive measures as climate-related conditions increase the likelihood of such incidents.
