AWERIAL – Humanitarian agencies have reiterated their commitment to support internally displaced persons seeking refuge in Awerial County of Lakes State with disaster relief assistance.

This was revealed during a weekly humanitarian cluster meeting chaired by Lakes state governor, Makur Kulang Liei, on Thursday in his office at the state’s headquarters in Rumbek.

The meeting deliberated on number of issues affecting people in the state in which Awerial County was on top of discussion with unfolding humanitarian crisis triggered by influx of internally flood displaced persons from neighboring state of Jonglei.

The governor lauded the humanitarian organizations for supporting the vulnerable communities in Awerial with medicine and food items.

“I am very happy after my visit to Awerial County, NGOs have responded positively with medical assistance, food items to flood victims sheltering in Mingkaman,” Kulang expressed.

The Kulang said the state authorities and partners will team up to deliver necessary assistance to the people affected by the flood.

In July floods prompted massive population movement to Bor Town, Dhiam-dhiam Island within Jonglei, Mingkaman, Mangala and Juba.

On 7th August 2020, Awerial reported first arrival of three boats from Jonglei state with 347 households with 1735 individuals and indicated the likelihood of unprecedented massive population movement into Mingkaman according to information they received from their Jonglei RRC counterpart.
