JUBA – South Sudan’s main armed opposition leader Dr. Riek Machar Teny has asked the SPLM-IO’s embattled and defiant military chief of staff General Simon Gatwech Dual who was removed last week following his appointment as a presidential advisor to report to Juba.

General Simon Gatwech was appointed by President Salva Kiir Mayardit bide a presidential decree on June 21 upon nomination by Machar who is also the country’s first vice president on the SPLM-IO ticket.

The following day, Dr. Machar is also the commander in chief of the SPLA-IO forces issued an order dismissing General Simon Gatwech Dual as the military chief of staff of the opposition group.

Gatwech has since refused to take up the situation and he has claimed in an interview with Radio Tamazuj last week that Machar had sent a hit squad and snipers to assassinate him in Magenis where he is currently based.

In a statement this afternoon, Machar’s office reiterated its earlier position that General Gatwech was in fact consulted and was appointed with his consent about six months ago saying there was no truth in the claims by the opposition commander.

“Gen. Simon Gatwech Dual Oath was appointed with his full knowledge and consent through a Republican Decree on 21″ June 2021 as Presidential Advisor for Peace. Per article 1.11.4 of R-ARCSS, the Presidency deliberated on increasing the number of advisors to four in two separate meetings in the past six (6) month so that SPLM/SPLA (IO) and South Sudan Opposition Alliance (SSOA) could each nominate an advisor,” the statement signed by the acting press secretary in Machar’s office Puok Both Baluang said.

“SPLM/SPLA (IO) leadership nominated General Simon Gatwech six months ago. This nomination was discussed in these two meetings,” the statement extended to Sudans Post reads in part.

The senior opposition official’s statement further revealed that Machar had sent a letter to General Simon Gatwech in Magenis in which the opposition leader directed General Simon Gatwech Dual to report to Khartoum where he could have been airlifted to Juba.

“H.E. Dr. Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon instructed Gen. Simon Gatwech Dual Oath, in a written letter after his appointment delivered to him by hand, to go to Khartoum, Sudan where his travel arrangements to Juba are completed,” the statement said.

“Furthermore, H.E. Dr. Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon, the Chairman and Commander-in-Chief of the SPLM/SPLA (IO) and the First Vice President of the Republic of South Sudan relieved Gen. Simon Gatwech Dual Oath from the position of Chief of General Staff of the SPLA (IO) with effect from Tuesday 22nd June 2021,” he added.

The main armed opposition group further reiterated “its full commitment to the implementation of R-ARCSS in letter and spirit, as the only way to attain a lasting peace in the Republic of South Sudan.”
