BREAKING: Machar calls off Upper Nile conference

JUBA – South Sudan’s First Vice President, Dr. Riek Machar Teny, has this evening called off the planned Upper Nile state conference which was due to begin in the capital Juba on Wednesday, his office said in a statement extended to Sudans Post.

Yesterday, Machar said in a statement extended to this website that the conference which would include almost 500 participants representing different segments of Upper Nile state communities would take place on Wednesday, December 16, for a period of three days ending December 19.

“The Office of the First Vice President of the Republic of South Sudan hereby informs the people of Upper Nile State and the public in general that, the planned “Upper Nile Conference” scheduled for 16th to 19th December 2020 has been postponed due delays in preparation arrangements,” the statement said.

It added that “a new date shall be set and it shall be communicated to you all.”

According to the yesterday statement, “the meeting will center on reconciliation and healing, cohesion among the communities living in the state, civil administration of the state especially the redress of the status of the civil servants that were laid off without due procedures of the civil service and cooperation among the political leaders in order to develop the state.”
