JUBA — The governor of South Sudan’s Upper Nile state General Abudhok Anyang Kur has this afternoon met First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar Teny in his office and discussed the revival of the Upper Nile conference declared by the peace presidency late last year.

“Tuesday, August 3rd, 2021 – His Excellency Dr. Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon, the First Vice President of the Republic of South Sudan, was briefed today, in his office, by Governor of Upper Nile State, Hon. Budhok Anyang Kur, on the general situation in the state,” Machar’s office said in a statement following the meeting this evening.

Abudhok is quoted in the statement as saying that he “briefed His excellancy the First Vice President on the security situation and discussed a number of administrative and logistical challenges facing the state government.”

He also said he and Machar “discussed the flooding situation in Upper Nile State and the efforts made by his government to resettle the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) from Fangak County, Jonglei State, who have been affected by the devastating flood.”

The opposition-nominated governor further said they also “discussed with His Excellency the First Vice President the reviving of Upper Nile State Conference declared by the Presidency on December 9th, 2021 with a view to providing platform to the communities of Upper Nile State to reconcile, heal, unite and restore the social fabric of their society as well as rebuild their state.”

He further called “upon the National Government and the humanitarian agencies to provide relief and emergency assistance to the people affected by the flood in Upper Nile State.”
