BREAKING | Machar receives second COVID-19 jab

South Sudan's First Vice President and main armed opposition leader Dr. Riek Machar Teny has this afternoon received his second coronavirus vaccine jab, according to a statement by the First Vice President's office.

JUBA – South Sudan’s First Vice President and main armed opposition leader Dr. Riek Machar Teny has this afternoon received his second coronavirus vaccine jab, according to a statement by the First Vice President’s office.

This comes almost two months after the prominent opposition politician received his first coronavirus vaccine, just one day after the government kicked off a country-wide vaccination drive.

In a statement this evening, Machar’s office said the First Vice President along with the minister of health Elizabeth Achuei as well as senior office staff of the First Vice President’s office.

“His Excellency Dr. Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon, First Vice President of the Republic of South Sudan has received today Wednesday 2nd June 2021, his second dose of Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine as protection against the COVID-19 virus,” the First Vice President’s office statement reads in part.

It added that Machar was “was vaccinated at his office together with Hon. Elizabeth Achuei, Minister of Health and senior officials in the office of the First Vice President.”

The statement further said that the First Vice President “reiterated his call on the People South Sudan to continue to observe preventive measures including wearing face mask and social distancing.”
