Machar says government serious about effecting federal system of governance

JUBA – South Sudan’s First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar Teny said on Wednesday that his government is serious about preparing the world’s youngest country for the federal system of governance.

The powerful opposition leader made the remarks during a work shop organized by the country’s ministry of federal affairs on federal system of governance in Juba on Wednesday.

“South Sudan has launched a workshop today in a bit to prepare the country for federalism. Organized by the ministry of Federal Affairs, the occasion was attended by senior government officials and a number of foreign diplomats,” Machar’s office said in a statement seen by Sudans Post.

The statement quoted Machar who is also the SPLM-IO leader as saying “South Sudan established the ministry for federalism which indicated the seriousness to prepare the nation for the federal system of governance.”

“Participants will brainstorm on how best to approach the federal system of government, with references to other best practices around the world. The matter will also be tackled in the permanent constitution-making process in accordance with the R-ARCSS.”

Machar has spearheaded the installment of federalism as teh governance system of South Sudan which has been provided for in the revitalized peace agreement signed in 2018 to end seven-year-old civil war.

  • We are proud when your office can move forward with such gesture and it need to be decentralised,involve the local community in this long awaited system that our citizens are longing for.
