Last week, Kiir and Machar agreed on allocation of security positions between the parties to the revitalized peace agreement. While the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF) took the lion’s share, the SPLA-IO was given the deputy army chief and inspector general of the army, among other senior positions of police and NSS positions.
In a statement, the presidency said Kiir and Machar met at the state-house J1 and the prominent opposition leader submitted the list of his nominees to various security organs to President Salva Kiir Mayardit.
“His Excellency Salva Kiir Mayardit, President of the Republic, had a brief meeting with the First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar and received the list of SPLM/A-IO Command Structure that shall be absorbed into the Unified Command structure of the Security Organs in the Country,” the presidency said.
“H.E. President Salva Kiir Mayardit will meet again with the First Vice President H.E. Dr. Riek Machar Teny together with the Vice President for Services Delivery Cluster H.E. Hussein Abdelbagi Akol to deliberate on the final list of the Unified Command Structure of the Security Organs in the Country,” the statement added.
It further said that “the two also had a discussion on the confrontations that are ongoing in some areas of Upper Nile and Unity State and H.E. President Salva Kiir Mayardit emphasized that, all the confrontations should cease and the people in those affected areas should live in peace and coexist in harmony.”
