JUBA – South Sudan’s main armed opposition Sudan People’s Liberation Movement in Opposition (SPLM-IO) led by First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar will on Saturday start membership registration in Central Equatoria State, according to a statement.

This announcement was made just a day after President Salva Kiir Mayardit who doubles as the chairman of the ruling Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM-IG) kicked out Machar who was the first deputy chair of the part and Pagan Amum who was the group’s secretary-general.

Kiir made the decision following a meeting of the political bureau chaired by him in the capital Juba on Thursday night and argued that Machar and Pagan, both of whom are leaders of separate opposition groups, can no longer continue after forming their parties.

In a statement this evening, the SPLM-IO Secretary in Central Equatoria State David Lisi Christopher called on the public and media houses to witness the launch of membership registration in Central Equatoria on Saturday, October 22nd 2022.

“We are highly delighted to invite the media houses to come and witness the actual beginning of SPLM-IO membership registration tomorrow Saturday 22nd October 2022,” Christopher wrote in the statement extended to Sudans Post this evening.

“The state party chairperson and the entire leadership of the SPLM-IO family in CES shall pick up their pens to register tomorrow at 10:00 am followed by the rest of the members,” the senior opposition official in Central Equatoria State added.

According to the statement, the launch of the registration drive for the main armed opposition group in Central Equatoria State will be conducted at the group’s party state secretariat at Juba Nabari which is near Munuki Bridge along the Custom-Bilpam Street.
