Machar, UN official discuss humanitarian assistance

The meeting between Machar and the Deputy Special Representative of the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), Anita Kiki Gbeho also reviewed progress in the peace implementation efforts and the coordination of taxes levied on UN imports.

JUBA – South Sudan’s First Vice President Riek Machar and a top United Nations official on Thursday discussed the need for aid assistance in the country.

The meeting between Machar and the Deputy Special Representative of the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), Anita Kiki Gbeho also reviewed progress in the peace implementation efforts and the coordination of taxes levied on UN imports.

“During the meeting, both parties engaged in constructive dialogue regarding the progress and challenges surrounding peace implementation in the country. They emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts in ensuring sustainable peace and stability, reaffirming their commitment to supporting peacebuilding initiatives in South Sudan,” the First Vice President’s office said in a statement.

Discussions also focused on facilitation of humanitarian assistance to areas affected by conflict, natural disasters and humanitarian crises like war in Sudan.

During the meeting, the two leaders further underscored the urgency of providing timely and effective aid to vulnerable populations, while emphasizing the need for enhanced cooperation and coordination among the international partners.

They expressed their shared commitment towards advancing peace, security and sustainable development through close collaboration and partnership.

The two leader, Machir’s office stated, also pledged to continue working together to address pressing challenges facing the country with a firm resolve to make tangible progress towards a more peaceful and prosperous South Sudan.
