Malong-allied commanders join government in Unity state

BENTIU – At least nine opposition commanders loyal to General Paul Malong Awan Anei of South Sudan United Front/Army (SSUF/A) in Unity state have joined the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces, according to Major-General Nhial Tot.

In a press conference held in Bentiu on Monday in the presence of Unity state governor Joseph Nguen Manytuil, General Nhial said they have decided, along with over 2500 troops, to join the implementation of the revitalized peace agreement because of the situation the people are undergoing.

“We would like to inform the people of South Sudan that we have fully declared our allegiance from South Sudan United Front/Army of General Paul Malong Awan to officially join South Sudan People’s Defense Forces of H.E General Salva Kiir Mayardit, President of teh Republic and Commander in Chief of the National Army with effects from October 5, 2020,” Nhial said.

“We are currently commanding more than 2500 troops, that are available in three areas, namely, Rubkona, Mayom and Ruweng Administrative Area,” he added.

Those who defected include General Nhial himself, Major-General Koang Makuei Gatbel, Major-General Malieth Malieth Nhial Wel, Major-General Majur Mayakol Bior, Major-General Bejany Kulang Keah, Brigadier-General Tut Kuol Gatkuoth, Brigadier-General Chol Mayar Thon, Brigadier-General Kuol Dak Thon, and Brigadier-General Simon Manytuil.

The group said they have decided to join teh implementation of the 2018 because they don’t want to be an obstacle to the peace in the country given the suffering the people of South Sudan have gone though in the world’s youngest country.

“Despite the fact that we are not signatories to teh revitalized peace agreement, we have decided to join its implementation though Bentiu Peace Initiative (BPI) so that our people can enjoy the real peace on the ground,” he said.

“As sons and daughters of South Sudan, we have decided not to be obstacle to peace in our own country. Our people have suffered enough for the last seven years, hence, cannot afford more suffering,” he added.
