The suspect, identified as Deng Deng Akot, reportedly quarrelled with his uncle, Angui Angui, 55, before the argument escalated into violence that resulted in the latter’s death on Monday.
According to the Northern Bahr el Ghazal State Police Spokesperson, Madut Ngong Aleu, the suspect was apprehended and is currently in police custody in Wanyjok town pending investigation.
“They had a dispute at home that led to the killing of the deceased identified as Angui Angui, aged 55, at Mangok Payam. The accused is now being held at the police station in Wanyjok as investigations continue,” Ngong said.
He added that a murder case has been opened against the suspect, while urging the public to remain calm as the authorities handle the matter.
“We call on relatives and family members of the deceased to stay calm as interrogations are ongoing. The case will be handled by the prosecuting authority,” Ngong stated.
The police spokesperson further appealed to residents to resolve land disputes through legal channels rather than resorting to violence.
“Taking the law into one’s own hands is a thing of the past. Land-related grievances should be addressed through local courts or formal legal processes,” he cautioned.
Land disputes have increasingly become common in parts of South Sudan, particularly in major towns such as Aweil, Wau, and Juba. Authorities continue to warn that resorting to violence over land ownership not only undermines justice but also results in severe legal consequences, including capital punishment for those found guilty of murder.
