JUBA – The governor of South Sudan’s troubled Unity State has named an acting commissioner for Mayom County, nearly four months after then county commissioner Maj. Gen. Chuol Gatluak Manimeh was killed in a rebel raid on Mayom town on July 22.

Rebels belonging to South Sudan People’s Movement/Army (SSPM/A) during the early hours of July 22, 2022 launched a surprise and deadly attack on Mayom town killing the commissioner after his house was burned by a grenade.

The governor and South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF) retaliated by launching operations against General Buay’s rebels and when as far as asking Sudan to handover at least four opposition commanders who were eventually killed in an extrajudicial manner sparking public outcry.

The governor has since been under scrutiny and President Salva Kiir Mayardit has recalled the governor to Juba where he is being kept at his private residence awaiting outcoming of an investigation committee that was formed by the president to investigate the general insecurity in Unity State.

In a statement on Tuesday evening, the office of the governor said the Manytuil has issued a gubernatorial decree appointing Maj. Gen. Bol Mayak as acting commissioner of Mayom County effective November 1.

“The governor of Unity State has issued a gubernatorial decree for the appointment of Maj. Gen. John Bol Mayak as acting Commissioner of Mayom County,” the governor’s office said in the statement extended to Sudans Post last evening.

In a separate decree, the governor suspended the SPLM-IO-nominated commissioner of Panyijiar County Gabriel Majiok Bol after claims by the ruling SPLM faction that the commissioner has been detaining their members and limiting civic space to only opposition parties such as the SPLM-IO.
