KUAJOK – At least one fisherman has been killed and two others injured in an attack by suspected armed youths from neighboring Unity State on a fishing area in Gogrial East County, Warrap State, according to police reports.

Lt. Colonel Thiik Agoth, a police inspector in Gogrial East County, reported that attackers targeted fishermen who were inspecting their fishing nets early in the morning on December 16.

“In the wee hours of 16 December, the attackers killed one person and left two critically injured at Malual-Adoor boma,”  Thiik told Sudans Post on Saturday.

Lt. Col. Thiik described the incident as alarming which he said left people in shock.

“We have managed to transfer those injured to Wau hospital for treatment and the attackers are being pursued as they moved towards Mayom.”

Thiik advised residents to refrain from moving into the swampy areas to avoid potential attacks.

Authorities in Twic County reported that 23 cows were allegedly taken from Mayen-Amuol Boma in Twic County by suspected individuals from Mayom County.

Officials in the region report that the attackers were observed moving toward a swampy area in Mayom County, and efforts are underway to recover the stolen cattle.

Cattle looting and retaliatory killings have been ongoing issues for many years, with attacks attributed to inadequate reconciliation efforts between the rival communities in Warrap State, Unity, and Lakes State.

Despite the ongoing state of emergency and disarmament initiatives, there is little evidence of progress, as reports of killings continue to emerge from areas populated by cattle-keeping communities.
