JUBA – Former South Sudan governor of the defunct Latjor state, Peter Lam Both, was on Wednesday afternoon sworn into office as the Acting SPLM Secretary General, a month after his nomination to the position by the ruling SPLM party.

Peter Lam was appointed on August 18 to serve as the acting SPLM secretary general, a month after his predecessor Kumba was selected by President Kiir during a meeting of SPLM lawmakers in parliament, as the first female speaker of the country’s recently formed Reconstituted Transitional National Legislative Assembly

Speaking during his swearing in ceremony, Lam said he “will work towards restructuring all the SPLM organs in the states and will also embark on the vision and mission of the party that aims at taking towns to the people in the rural areas.”

For his part, President Salva Kiir who is also the chairman of the SPLM urged holdout rebel groups to end their war against the government and join the ongoing implementation of the revitalized peace agreement.

“His Excellency President Salva Kiir Mayardit in his capacity as the Chairman of Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM), presided over the swearing-in ceremony of Cde Peter Lam Both as the Acting Secretary-General of SPLM.,” the presidency said in a statement.

Kiir urged “the people who are still in possession of fire arms to put down their guns and join the peace process.”
