David Ngiro Yangkon, the Chairperson of the Murle Community Youth Association, revealed in a letter dated 11/04/2025 that mobilization from the eastern part of the administrative area was underway before the traditional authorities intervened under the directive of the Chief Administrator.
“In the last two weeks, our youth from the eastern part of GPAA mobilized to attack Eastern Equatoria State, particularly Kapoeta areas and in the process, H.E. Peter Guzulu, Chief Administrator of GPAA dispatched a team of traditional chiefs led by paramount chief, Nyikcho Ame Bullen from Pibor to Marwo and jebel to stop the mobilization, which they successfully managed,” said Ngiro in a statement seen by Sudans Post.
The youth chairperson underscored that the plan has since been aborted, with authorities opting for dialogue.
“As of now, there is no any other gathering of youth or further planning of attack on any community neighbouring GPAA in the efforts of peace and reconciliation between GPAA, Eastern Equatoria, and Jonglei State governments,” said Ngiro.
While it was unclear why the youth were mobilizing to attack the neighbouring region, the Pibor and Kapoeta conflict is a long-standing dispute between the Murle people of the Greater Pibor Administrative Area (GPAA) and the Toposa people of Kapoeta, both in South Sudan.
The conflict is characterized by violence, including cattle raids, abductions, and killings, often fueled by resource competition and historical grievances.
