AWEIL – A police officer serving in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State has been found dead in a river in Marial-baai Payam of Aweil West County after reportedly going missing for several days, authorities have confirmed.
The deceased, identified as Sergeant John Akot Ajith, had been attached to the state police service. According to the Police Spokesperson for Northern Bahr el Ghazal State, Madut Ngong Aleu, the officer’s body was discovered on Thursday in a local river in Marial-baai, bringing shock and grief to colleagues and family members.
Speaking to local radio station Akol Yam FM, Aleu said the late officer had been granted leave from active duty due to mental health challenges. Despite his condition, he remained committed to his responsibilities and frequently visited his duty station.
“What happened is that the officer from our institution went missing, and we are deeply saddened by his death. John Akot Ajith was a long-serving officer who worked in the rank of sergeant. He carried out his duties faithfully and in accordance with the law,” Aleu said.
The spokesperson noted that although Ajith had been given time off, he often returned to the police station in both the state headquarters and the county, demonstrating dedication to his profession. He was last seen in Marial-baai before he reportedly disappeared. His body was later recovered from a nearby river.
Aleu described the late officer as disciplined and committed to the implementation of the rule of law. He added that the police service would take appropriate steps to honour his legacy and service to the state and country.
“The officer in question is someone we knew well. He loved his job and was regularly present at the Marial-baai Payam police station, even while on leave. We will do what it takes to honour his legacy,” Aleu said.
The police spokesperson also urged families and communities to pay close attention to individuals living with mental health conditions. He cautioned that leaving vulnerable persons unattended can expose them to dangers such as flooding rivers and other environmental hazards.
Authorities have not indicated any signs of foul play, and further details surrounding the circumstances of his death remain limited.
