JUBA – Renovation of South Sudan’s Tonj branch of the Egyptian Alexandria University is commencing soon, ahead of it’s inauguration in April next year, according to a top academic official.

Marial Awou Yol, the head of South Sudan committee meeting a Egyptian delegation in Juba, revealed that the renovation of the long-awaited Alexandria University branch in Tonj will start as soon as as preparations, which he said were going on, are completed.

Marial who is also the Vice Chancellor of Upper Nile University revealed the new development following a meeting at Pyramid Hotel, with a visiting Egyptian delegation over the opening of Alexandria University branch.

“After a lengthy review and discussion of yesterday’s visit to the site, the two sides reached an agreement to open the institution as early as April 2021,” he wrote on his facebook page.

“On this note, I take this opportunity to congratulate the people of greater Tonj, people of Warrap State, people of greater Bhar El-Ghazal region and the entire South Sudan on this historic achievement,” he said.

More than ten years ago, the Government of Southern Sudan and Egypt agreed to open a branch of the Alexandria University in Tonj of South Sudan’s Warrap state.

The plan has since remained without implementation owing to logistical issues.
