In a statement released on Monday, The INTREPID South Sudan expressed that their executive director, Bol Deng Bol, is facing threats from the state government due to his outspoken criticism regarding restrictions on freedom of expression.
According to the Jonglei-based civil society organization, Bol Deng Bol’s intimidation followed his recent criticism of new policies introduced by the state government.
The civil organization stated that the incident raises significant concerns regarding not only Mr. Bol’s safety but also the overall state of fundamental freedoms in Jonglei.
“This press statement serves to express our concern for the safety of the activist in question and the deteriorating status of the freedom of expression in Jonglei State following this stern intimidation,” a statement extended to Sudans Post read.
The right group appealed to State Governor Dr. Riek Gai Kok to demonstrate tolerance and protect civic space by guaranteeing freedoms of speech enshrined in the constitution.
It emphasized the importance of protecting media independence, the right to free expression, and the right of assembly and association, which it said are central pillars of democracy.
“These are the major pillars of a democratic governance system that South Sudan is harnessing.”
It called on state government to respect civic actors who play a role in promoting peace, human rights, and accountability.
Observers note that the incident comes at a time when civil society actors in South Sudan continue to face challenges in engaging openly on governance issues.
Advocacy groups have repeatedly called on authorities to create an enabling environment where activists and the media can operate without fear of intimidation or reprisal.
