JUBA — South Sudan government has welcomed, in a statement, a decision by neighboring Kenya’s government to waive visa requirements for its citizens.

South Sudan’s ministry of foreign affairs and international cooperation said the waiving is in line with a recent decision made by East African Community heads of state during a visual meeting.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MFA&IC) of the Republic of South Sudan welcomes the statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the sisterly Republic of Kenya on waiving the requirements for obtaining visa to enter Kenya for the citizens of the Republic of South Sudan who hold valid passports issued by the Government of the Republic of South Sudan,” the statement reads in part.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation on behalf of the R-TGONU welcomes the statement which is in line with the directives made at the recent East African Community (EAC) Virtual Summit by both President Salva Kiir Mayardit and President Uhuru Kenyatta of Kenya in favour of visa waiver,” the statement added.

It further said that “within the spirit of reciprocity and to further contribute in promoting the existing bilateral relations between South Sudan and Kenya, the Ministry of Interior as competent institution through its Directorate of Nationality, Immigration and Passports will immediately operationalize the visa waiver as per this press statement.”
