S. Sudan youth coalition demands 20% share of power in unity government

JUBA – A coalition of at least 20 national youth organizations in South Sudan is demanding at 20% share of power in the country’s transitional government of national unity as well as in the upcoming state governments.

Christine Kide, the National Coordinator for South Sudan Youth Organizations Coalition told Sudans Post that her organization is working hard to ensure that  youth are represented at all levels of the government.

“When we start with this 20% representation, it will enable our voices to be tabled at all levels in the parliament, executive, governorship, and state levels. When we calculate the 20% at all levels of the government, it will bring very big number of youth in the decision making process,” Kide said.

The organization’s coordinator explained that a 20% youth quota is just a starting point for them, adding that they will demand more shares in the future.

“To us it is the starting point. We hope that as the leaders endorse it, in future, we shall find ways on how to increase our participation in the government,” she said.

“The issue of 20% representation, to us, is the starting point, and we all know that our leaders are our forefathers who strongly participated in the liberation of this country, and are still taking their time to finish or enjoy the profit of their journey,” Kide added.

South Sudan Youth Organizations Coalition has tabled youth quota at the on-going national conference, awaiting endorsement.
