JUBA, JULY 5, 2023 (SUDANS POST) — South Sudan was on Wednesday admitted into the Non-Aligned Movement during a meeting conducted in Azerbaijan, according to acting foreign minister Deng Dau.

“South Sudan was officially admitted to the membership of the Non-Aligned Movement. I was given an opportunity to address the august gathering on behalf of the Republic of South Sudan,” he said.

The Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) is an international organization who do not want to be officially aligned with or against any major power bloc.

As of 2019, the movement had 120 members and 27 observers.

The foreign ministry said South Sudan’s admission to the NAM represents an opportunity to strengthen diplomatic ties with other member states, potentially leading to increased trade, investment, and development opportunities.

“It also gives South Sudan a global platform to express concerns and interests, particularly on issues of peace and security, development, and human rights,” it added.

Minister Deng said he held a series of discussions with foreign leaders including foreign ministers of Qatar and Malaysia.

“I also met the state minister of Qatar’s Foreign Affairs. We discussed issues of bilateral relations and the situation in Sudan. I also met the Foreign Minister of Malaysia,” he said.

“We discussed issues of common interest and the situation of our students under the scholarship of Patrons and those with self-sponsorship. We discussed the conditions facing our students in Malaysia,” he added.
