South Sudan army officer detained in connection to Sherikat incident released

JUBA – South Sudan army officer who was detained in July in connection to the June incident in Sherikat in which six people, including an army intelligence officer, were killed has been set free by the government.

Brigadier General Majier Abdalla Mabior who was the military attaché at South Sudan embassy in Kampala was arrested following allegations that he was among those who perpetuated the deadly incident.

Speaking to Sudans Post this morning, a senior member of the SSPDF and a close friend to Mabior said the former military representative to Uganda had been released following the release of the finding by an investigation committee which found no evidence to support claims that the Sherikat incident was planned.

“General Majier has been released. It is really a good news for us the colleagues and the family above all,” the army officer said on condition of anonymity. “We were certain that he shouldn’t be arrested and illegally detained in the first place. He shouldn’t have been put under detention.”

Last week, a committee established by President Salva Kiir Mayardit in June found no evidence of premeditated attack from either parties of the Sherikat incident.

The committee however said the army officer, Lt. Col. Lual Akok Kiir, who is related to President Salva Kiir Mayardit and who shot-dead five people acted in manner to defense himself.
