JUBA – South Sudan has asked the Norwegian government to assist them with technical assistance during elections.

Ramadan M. Abdallah Goc, South Sudan’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, made this call during a meeting with visiting Norwegian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Andreas Motzeldt Kravik in Juba on Monday.

“We inform them about the readiness of the government to hold elections and we ask them if they can provide technical assistance to all these institutions,” said Abdallah.

Abdallah said that Norway responded positively by pledging to provide electoral assistance to the government and relevant national institutions to support the preparation and conduct of peaceful, inclusive, and credible elections.

“We are happy that they have shown their commitment to work with us and to provide the assistance that is required from them,” he said.

“They said they are ready to cooperate with us and do more training for our police and they are ready also to help to participate in general elections and our youth,” he added.

He said they briefed the delegation on government preparation for the general elections that will be held in December.

Andreas Motzeldt Kravik, Norwegian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs said they discussed the importance of elections to be held according to international standards and according to human rights principles.

“We spoke about the importance of free and fair elections procedures and providing for civic space and providing for opportunities for civil society and individuals to engage without any restrictions again and full compliance with international standard,” said Motzeldt.
