SEOUL—South Sudan has explored potential cooperation with South Korea’s Korea Water Resources Corporation (K-water) to develop the Fula Dam and other water infrastructure projects.

Senior Presidential Envoy on Special Programs Adut Kiir met with K-water’s president in Seoul to explore cooperation in hydropower, water supply, sanitation and flood mitigation, according to a statement from her office.

The discussions included the Fula Dam project, which Adut identified as an opportunity for further exploration as South Sudan seeks to develop its hydropower potential.

The statement did not provide details on the project’s financing, construction timeline or any agreement to proceed with development.

The proposed Fula Dam on the White Nile in Nimule, Eastern Equatoria State, is among the government’s most ambitious projects to expand South Sudan’s hydropower capacity. If built, it could increase domestic electricity generation.

The meeting also addressed potential support for water treatment plants in Juba and other parts of the country, sewage treatment systems and flood mitigation measures.

Adut expressed her ambition to establish partnerships that could extend clean water connections to at least 80 per cent of Juba’s population and expand access to other parts of South Sudan.

She also highlighted the need for flood protection to safeguard communities, farmers and agricultural production from recurring floods.

The talks also covered technical partnerships, scholarships, exchange programmes and capacity-building initiatives to strengthen South Sudanese expertise in water management and infrastructure development.

K-water has experience in international water and infrastructure projects, including hydropower development in Pakistan and the Philippines and water supply projects in Indonesia.
