JUBA — South Sudan government said on Monday it confiscated 11 commercial trucks carrying substandard and smuggled fuels destined for Juba from Uganda.

The consignment was intercepted at the Nimule Port of Entry on Monday during a routine inspection carried out by the South Sudan National Bureau of Standards (SSNBS).

The regulatory body said in a statement issued on Monday that fuel was found to be non-compliant with the relevant East African standards.

“The South Sudan National Bureau of Standards (SSNBS), in line with its mandate under the National Bureau of Standards Act, 2012, has intercepted a consignment of 11 fuel trucks at the Nimule Port of Entry during a routine inspection,” it said.

It said the consignment failed to meet quality standards after undergoing standard quality assessment procedures, which included laboratory tests and analysis.

“In accordance with the bureau’s mandate to safeguard public health, protect the environment, and ensure consumer safety, the decision was made to re-export the substandard fuel to its country of origin.”

They decided to re-export the substandard fuel to its country of origin to safeguard consumers.

The regulatory body permits entry only for products that are quality-assured and compliant with established standards in the country.

In April 2025, the South Sudan National Bureau of Standards (SSNBS) returned 3,840 bags of substandard white sorghum to neighboring Uganda.

The consignment transported by six trucks was inbound for humanitarian purposes before it was seized at the Nimule border entry point.

South Sudan established the National Bureau of Standards in 2012 with the aim of implementing standards, testing, inspecting, market surveillance, certification, accreditation, and other technical regulations to protect consumers from harmful products.
