JUBA – Young people in South Sudan’s Jonglei state have threatened to take to the streets to stage peaceful protests against the state government over deteriorating insecurity that is killing a lot of people in the restive state.

An incident report released on 7th December by Jonglei State Governor Denay Chagor revealed that at least 32 people were killed in November in various attacks in the region.

The reports said the dead and injured were mainly linked to cattle raids and road ambushes.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Chairperson of Bor Community Youth Association, Dot Michael Panchol said the youth will take soon to demand the restoration of stability and security in the state.

“Therefore, should your leadership fail to appropriately respond to this concern, we will resort to exercising our constitutional rights or freedom by means of a mass demonstration in the state capital and other major towns in the state to demand the restoration of security by the government of Jonglei State,” Panchol said in a statement extended to Sudans Post on Sunday.

Panchol said blamed the frequent travel of the governor outside the county for growing insecurity in the state.

“Your frequent travels outside the state and lack of political will in your leadership to face, head-on, realities on the ground among others have unfortunately condoned and exacerbated the security situation in the state,” Panchol said.

The youth leader demanded an immediate response to contain the growing insecurity in the state.

“Should you (state government) ignore our grave concern herein, we will be left with no option but to head out in search of the remaining 18 out of 21 persons allegedly killed in Greater Pibor Administrative Area and other 3 persons are confirmed to have been murdered and we will bring them home dead or alive,” he said.

“We believe that security and peaceful coexistence amongst ourselves as the people of Jonglei state and with our neighbor is significant paramount. That is why the laws of the county bestow upon each citizen, the obligation to aid in security stabilization. We also know that protection of citizens is a primary obligation of the government,” he said.
