Yakani who is the Executive Director of Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO) was among members of the civil society organizations and faith-based groups invited by the government to make their input to the peace roadmap during a meeting at the ministry of cabinet affairs this afternoon.
Speaking to Sudans Post following the meeting, Yakani said they have agreed with the government to extend the transitional period for 24 months (or two years) divided into two phases.
18 months will specifically be for the implementation of the agreement and six months for conduct of elections where a new government will be elected.
“We reached consensus that yes, 18 months is a technical period for implementation of the revitalized agreement and six months were added to make it twenty-four months,” Yakani said.
“The six months will be for transfer of power to a new elected government because you know elections need enough period to bring in a new elected government. So we gave six extra months to make it twenty four months for the implementation of the revitalized agreement and that what we have agreed with them,” Yakani added.
The outspoken activist further said that they have pressured the government that elections must be conducted by December 2024.
“We have agreed with them that elections by December 2024 are conducted,” Yakani added.
