Colonel John Kassara Koang Nhial, the spokesperson for South Sudan National Police Service, said the suspects were apprehended on Oct. 19 with fake $1,500 notes.
“The Criminal Investigation Department GHQRS personnel managed to apprehend five suspects with fake notes of $1,500 USD at different locations,” Kassara said.
He added that the primary suspect was captured in the Suk-Sita residential area while police pursued leads related to the counterfeit bills’ source.
Among the five suspects detained, four are South Sudanese citizens, while the fifth is an Ethiopian national.
“A criminal case will be opened at the Northern Police Division, and the investigation is still under C.I.D. GHQRS,” Kassara said.
South Sudan’s Penal Code Act Section 156 stipulates a maximum prison sentence of seven years and a fine for those convicted of counterfeiting currency.
