South Sudan to change time zone on ‘political grounds’ – Lomoro

The world’s youngest country currently uses the same time zone with other East African countries.
Speaking to reporters following a governance cluster meeting on Friday, Lomoro said the government is planning to change the country’s time zone, saying the country will be one hour ahead, instead of one hour behind.
“We have approved a proposal to change the time zone,” Lomoro said.
“So, South Sudan is one hour ahead instead of one hour back. We are planning to change the South Sudan time zone on political grounds,” the senior government official told reporters on Friday.
Lomoro further revealed that the governance cluster has directed the minister of East African Community Affairs, Deng Alor Kuol, to consult with his counter parts on how change in the time zone could affect the country.
Following the independence in 2011, the world’s youngest country has been using Middle East Time Zone along with Sudan, but changed that to the East African Time Zone in 2017.
